Professional Background

DSc Rüdiger Mutz holds university degrees in psychology (Dipl.-Psych.) and economics (Dipl.-Kfm.). He was a senior researcher at the Chair of Social Psychology and Higher Education Research at ETH Zurich until July 2020. Since August 2020, he has been a senior researcher at the "Competence Center for Higher Education and Science Studies", CHESS, at UZH.

After his studies in psychology, Mr. Mutz worked in the field of biostatistics as a research associate at the Institute of Forest Utilization and Work Science, University of Freiburg, Germany (Prof. Dr. Grammel, Prof. Dr. Lewark, and Prof. Dr. Becker) from 1991 to 2003. He received his doctorate in 1998 from the then Faculty of Forest Sciences at the University of Freiburg (Germany) on the topic, "Inhomogeneity of Wood as a Raw Material and Product Material - Conceptual, Methodological-Statistical and Empirical Implications for Wood Science Studies" (reviewers: Prof. Dr. Lewark, Prof. Dr. Pelz). Parallel to his dissertation, Mr. Mutz led an evaluation project on the acceptance of the reformed study program "Forest Sciences" among lecturers and students at the University of Freiburg (Germany). In 2002, Mr. Mutz was awarded the "Environmental Psychology" prize of the German Society of Psychology (DGPs) for his work analyzing spatial attitudinal patterns in the project "Motives and Structures of Private Forest Owners in North Rhine-Westphalia". In January 2003, Mr. Mutz joined ETH Zurich’s Professorship for Social Psychology and Research on Higher Education, where he taught social psychology. Between 2006 and 2009, Mr. Mutz also worked at the Didactics Center of ETH Zurich (now Educational Development and Technology). His research interests at ETH were research evaluations based on peer review and bibliometrics, methodological-statistical questions in higher education research (e.g., bias-corrected ranking procedures, inter-rater reliability), and meta-analyses. Since 2010, Mr. Mutz has conducted research on various issues related to peer review of research funding organizations, using the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) as an example, which has provided extensive datasets on the peer review process. The FWF has continued the collaboration in 2020. In addition to a series of meta-analyses on peer review (e.g., gender bias, reliability), the focus of his work at ETH Zurich was on the further development of statistical tools. The application of psychometric models to questions of competence measurement using bibliometric data and the statistical efficiency measurement of research (Stochastic Frontier) are instances of such tools.  Mr. Mutz is a member of the European Association of Methodology (EAM) and of the section "Methods and Evaluation" l of the German Psychological Society.

Rüdiger Mutz has been a senior researcher at CHESS since August 2020. He brings his expertise in the field of "Quantitative Science Studies" in research, teaching, consulting to the CHESS. He leads the project "SRM_RM: Swiss research monitoring and the responsible use of metrics" and studies, on behalf of Prof. em. Dr. Hans-Dieter Daniel (as mandated by CHESS) among others, the application and decision procedures of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

Tools

  • Excellence Mapping: The web application visualizes the impact of papers published in several subject areas (and in all subject areas) on researchers and other status groups. The application is based on Scopus and Mendeley data. For each institution (university or research-focused institution), which is represented by a circle on a map and included in an institutional list, the estimated probabilities of publishing highly cited or highly bookmarked papers are shown. The web application was developed in collaboration with staff of the Max Planck Society (Dr.Dr.habil Lutz Bornmann, Dr Robin Haunschild), two graphic designers (Moritz Stefaner, Mirko Clemente), and Felix de Moya (SCImago group) and is regularly renewed and further developed.Exellence mapping V2
  • Excellence Network: The web application visualizes how successful universities or research-focused institutions collaborate. The application is based on papers (articles, reviews and conference papers) published between 2012 and 2016 in several subject areas and in “All areas”. The web application was developed in collaboration with staff of the Max Planck Society (Dr.Dr.habil Lutz Bornmann, Dr Robin Haunschild), two graphic designers (Moritz Stefaner, Mirko Clemente), and Felix de Moya (SCImago group) and is regularly renewed and further developed.Excellence network
  • CitedReferenceExplorer (CRExplorer): Which are the most important papers in the history of a field? On whose shoulders of giants does an author stand? Where to look for the intellectual roots of a research topic? These questions can be answered by using the program CitedReferencesExplorer (CRExplorer). CitedReferenceExplorer

Mandates

Mr. Mutz is investigating the application procedure of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) on behalf of Prof. Dr. em. Hans-Dieter Daniel (as mandate of CHESS). Furthermore, he analyzes data from an extensive questionnaire survey on the individual, institutional and societal effects of postdoctoral fellowship programs for internationally mobile scientists offered by two research funding organizations, the Volkswagen Foundation and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
