Dr. rer. nat. Rüdiger Mutz verfügt über Hochschulabschlüsse in Psychologie (Dipl.-Psych.) und Wirtschaftswissenschaften (Dipl.-Kfm.). Er war bis Juli 2020 Senior Researcher an der Professur für Sozialpsychologie und Hochschulforschung der ETH Zürich. Seit August 2020 ist er senior researcher am «Competence Center for Higher Education and Science Studies», CHESS, der UZH.

Herr Mutz arbeitete nach seinem Studium der Psychologie von 1991 bis 2003 im Bereich der Biostatistik als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Forstbenutzung und Forstliche Arbeitswissenschaft der Universität Freiburg, Deutschland (Prof. Dr. Grammel, Prof. Dr. Lewark, Prof. Dr. Becker). Er promovierte im Jahr 1998 an der damaligen Fakultät für Forstwissenschaften der Universität Freiburg (Deutschland) mit dem Thema „Inhomogenität der Roh- und Werkstoffs Holz – Konzeptuelle, methodisch-statistische und empirische Implikationen für holzkundliche Untersuchungen (Gutachter: Prof. Dr. Lewark, Prof. Dr. Pelz). Parallel zu einer Dissertation leitete Herr Mutz ein Evaluationsprojekt zur Akzeptanz des reformierten Studiengangs „Forstwissenschaften“ bei Lehrenden und Studierenden der Universität Freiburg (Deutschland). Im Jahr 2002 wurde Herr Mutz mit dem Preis der Fachgruppe „Umweltpsychologie“ der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Psychologie (DGPs) ausgezeichnet für seine Arbeit zur Analyse von räumlichen Einstellungsmusterm im Rahmen des Projekts „Motive und Strukturen von Privatwaldbesitzer in Nordrhein-Westfalen“. Im Januar 2003 wechselte Herr Mutz an die ETH Zürich an die Professur für Sozialpsychologie und Hochschulforschung, wo er Sozialpsychologie lehrte. Zwischen 2006 und 2009 arbeitete Herr Mutz auch am damaligen Didaktik-Zentrum der ETH Zürich (heute: Stabsbereich Lehrentwicklung und – technologie, LET). Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte an der ETH waren Forschungsevaluation auf der Grundlage von Peer-review-Verfahren und Bibliometrie, methodisch-statistische Fragen der Hochschulforschung (z.B. verzerrungskorrigierte Rankingverfahren, Interrater-Reliabilität) und Metaanalysen. So forschte Herr Mutz seit 2010 zu verschiedenen Fragen des Peer-Review von Forschungsförderorganisationen am Beispiel des Wissenschaftsfonds Österreich (FWF), der umfangreiche Datensätze zum Peer-Review-Verfahren zur Verfügung stellte. Der FWF setzt die Zusammenarbeit 2020 fort. Neben einer Reihe von Metaanalysen zum peer review (z.B. gender bias, Reliabilität) stand die Weiterentwicklung des statistischen Instrumentariums im Vordergrund seiner Arbeit an der ETH Zürich, so die Anwendung von psychometrischen Modellen auf Fragen der Kompetenzmessung mittels bibliometrischer Daten oder der statistischen Effizienzmessung von Forschung (Stochastic Frontier). Herr Mutz ist Mitglied der European Association of Methodology (EAM) und der Fachgruppe «Methoden und Evaluation» der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Psychologie.

Seit August 2020 ist Rüdiger Mutz Senior Researcher am CHESS. Er bringt seine Expertise im Bereich der «Empirischen Wissenschaftsforschung» in Forschung, Lehre, Beratung und Mandate ins CHESS ein. Er leitet das Projekt «SRM_RM: Swiss research monitoring and the responsible use of metrics» und untersucht im Auftrag von Herrn Prof. Dr. em. Hans-Dieter Daniel (als Mandat des CHESS) u.a. das Antragsverfahren des Wissenschaftsfonds Österreichs (FWF).

• Excellence-Mapping: Die Web-Applikation visualisiert die Wirkung von Publikationen, die in verschiedenen Fachgebieten (und allen Fachgebieten) veröffentlicht wurden im Hinblick auf Forschende und andere Statusgruppen (bibliometrische und altmetrische Indikatoren). Die Web-Anwendung wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit Mitarbeitern der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (Dr.Dr.habil Lutz Bornmann, Dr. Robin Haunschild), zwei Grafikern (Moritz Stefaner, Mirko Clemente) und Felix de Moya (SCImago group), der bibliometrische Daten liefert, entwickelt und wird regelmässig erneuert und weiterentwickelt.Excellence Mapping V2
• Excellence-Network: Die Web-Applikation visualisiert, wie erfolgreich Universitäten oder forschungsorientierte Einrichtungen zusammenarbeiten. Sie wurde von den gleichen Autoren entwickelt wie das ExcellenceMapping.Excellence Network
• Cited Reference Explorer (CRExplorer): Mit dieser Applikation werden die in Publikationen besonders häufig zitierten Dokumente (cited references) analysiert. Die Applikation eignet sich besonders dazu, historische Wurzeln von Forschungsfeldern zu untersuchen, z.B. die historischen Wurzeln des «Higgs boson» (CERN, Genf).CRExplorer

Herr Mutz untersucht im Auftrag von Herrn Prof.em. Dr. Hans-Dieter Daniel (als Mandat des CHESS) das Antragsverfahren des Wissenschaftsfonds Österreichs (FWF). Des weiteren analysiert er Daten einer umfangreichen Fragebogenerhebung zu den individuellen, institutionellen und gesellschaftlichen Wirkungen von Stipendienprogramme für international mobile Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler nach der Promotion, die von zwei Forschungsförderorganisationen, der Volkswagenstiftung und der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung angeboten werden.
